Key-Value Stores: The Minimalist Champions

Imagine the ultimate minimalist database: You give it a key, it gives you a value. That's it.

No complex queries. No joins. No aggregations. Just: "Hey database, here's key 'user_12345', give me the data!"

Popular Examples: Redis, DynamoDB, Aerospike

The Amazon Story: When Amazon analyzed their massive system, they discovered something shocking: 95% of their database operations were simple key-based lookups!

• "Give me user profile for user_12345"
• "Give me order details for order_67890"
• "Give me auth token for token_abcdef"

They weren't using fancy SQL features - just primary key lookups!

What you can do:

• GET key → returns value
• PUT key, value → stores data
• DELETE key → removes data

What you CAN'T do:

• "Find all users older than 25" ❌
• "Calculate average order value" ❌
• "Show me posts from my friends" ❌

The trade-off: By accepting these limitations, key-value stores can:

• Scale to millions of operations per second
• Distribute across hundreds of servers effortlessly
• Never worry about complex query optimization

Pro Tip: Most applications are just fancy key-value lookups in disguise - and that's perfectly fine!
