EXERCISE
1Understand both the superpowers and the kryptonite of database sharding before you commit to this architecture.
Sharding buys scale and charges for it. Both sides of that trade are worth knowing before you commit to it.
What it buys you:
What it costs you:
The Cross-Shard Query Problem: Imagine wanting to find "all users who bought product X in the last month." If users are in one shard and orders are in another shard, this becomes incredibly expensive and slow.
The Golden Rule: "Design your strategy to minimize cross-shard queries. The best sharded systems rarely need to query across shards."
Pro Tip: Sharding gives you infinite scale at the cost of operational complexity - make sure you really need that scale before paying that price.
